Lesson Planning & Delivery

Please become familiar with the Guidelines and Rubric found in the DropBox judges' folder.  There are several categories of Lesson Planning & Delivery, including Arts, Humanities, CTE and STEM.  For the purpose of this competition, good teaching is good teaching and the only difference is in the subject matter being taught.

This is one category in which most of the evaluation will happen prior to the event.  The only part of the competition NOT evaluated before the event is the reflection/Q & A part of the event.

The first step is to review the lesson/learning plan.  Learning or lesson plans will come in different formats.  However, all instructional plans have common elements, including standards, learning target or objective, materials, essential questions, anticipatory set, before/during/after sequenced learning, gradual release/guided and independent practice, assessment and closure

Please view the video of the lesson that the candidate submitted.  This is not the entire lesson, but rather a 10 minute sampling of the execution of the lesson/learning plan.
Return to the scoring rubric.  How would you score the exemplar… and why?

To help you calibrate, please open the sample rubric that has been included.  A compilation of judges’ scores and comments have been transcribed.  It is important to keep in mind that you may differ in points awarded; however, you must be consistent among all competitors.  The Guidelines will help in assigning scores.

  • If you have any concerns, please reach out to heather.jones@doe.virginia.gov

Competitors will receive their rubrics so that they may reflect on their performance and improve.  Some of these students will be competing at Nationals where they will be up against more than 20 students from across the United States.  It is vital that your scores are representative of the quality of work submitted.  Please be sure to give feedback; however, frame in a constructive manner.

The day of the event, you will receive your rubrics.  If any scores differ significantly among the judges, they will need to be discussed.
